Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos appeals to all the Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos calls on all sectors of society to act to stop gender violence in Puerto Rico. "Gender violence is a public health issue and a violation of human rights, so it is incumbent upon all of us as a society to act urgently to eradicate it. We join the public demand made by the National Network of Gender Violence Shelters to create a country plan that promotes public policy and concrete, coordinated and continuous actions to address gender violence," said the interim executive director of Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos, Lenna Marielys Ramirez-Cintrón. At Casa Julia we recognize that this is a complex issue and one that merits a multi-sectoral analysis. "If we do not start now to look at the issue as a priority and create effective solutions, we will continue to deny women their right to live free of violence," added Ramirez-Cintron. Olga Lopez Baez, president of Casa Julia's Board of Directors, expressed concern about the alarming increase in cases. "It is time to join forces to stop gender violence. We demand that the legislative and executive branches implement a curriculum with a gender perspective that provides young people with the tools to detect danger signs and encourage other healthier and fairer ways of building relationships." At Casa Julia we believe that Puerto Rico deserves to be a country of equity where the right of all people to live in well-being and free from violence is respected. We emphasize the need for an educational approach to violence prevention. In addition, we pointed out the need to recognize domestic violence shelters as essential services and to address the problem of lack of access to housing for survivors. Casa Julia's most important message is for victims: "You are not alone, we can support you," added Ms. Lopez Baez. The Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos hotline is available 24/7 at 787.548.5290.
The previous week, a highly dedicated volunteer from the The week before, a volunteer who is extremely dedicated to the cause of eradicating gender-based violence gave us an unforgettable afternoon. Ally Fabiola organized, together with our staff, a self-care activity for our participants. The afternoon was full of love and hope. A motivational talk and a writing workshop took place. Afterwards the participants had the opportunity to have their hair and nails done. They finished the activity by creating their own flower pot, where @sun_flowerspr reminded us that we bloom differently when we are full of self-love. On behalf of the entire team, we recognize our allies in creating these spaces for survivors. We are an organization that works with and for Puerto Rico, for this reason we are extremely grateful for all the support we receive to build healthy, dignified and violence-free lives.
